How the calculation works

Your course grade is a weighted average of everything before the final and the final itself. If the final is worth 30%, the rest of your work counts for 70% — so the score you need is whatever closes the gap between your target and your current grade, scaled up by how little the final counts. That scaling is why a course with a 20% final is nearly decided already, while a 50% final can rescue (or sink) almost any grade.

Knowing the number is the easy half. Hitting it is about how you study in the final weeks: our guide to active recall covers why self-testing beats rereading, and the exam study plan calculator turns your remaining days into a schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate what I need on my final exam?

Use the formula: needed = (desired grade − current grade × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight, with the weight as a decimal. For example, with a 88% current grade, a final worth 30%, and a 90% target: (90 − 88 × 0.7) ÷ 0.3 = 94.7%. This calculator does that math for you and shows the requirement for each letter grade.

Where do I find my final exam weight?

Check the course syllabus — the grading breakdown usually lists each category's percentage, like homework 20%, midterms 40%, final 40%. If the final replaces a midterm or the syllabus uses points instead of percentages, convert to the final's share of total points.

The score I need is really high. What should I do?

Start early and study with active recall instead of rereading. Turn the whole course into flashcards and practice questions, review them daily with spaced repetition, and simulate the exam at least once. High final scores come from having every topic retrievable under pressure, which is exactly what spaced practice trains.
